A snob is an inferior person with a superiority complex.
People who run down others are taking a roundabout way of praising themselves.
The trouble with the self-made man is that he worships the creator.
The egotist is always someone who is me-deep in conversation.
Some folks try to push themselves forward by patting themselves on the back.
People who sing their own praises do so without accompaniment.
It is the nature of God that He makes something out of nothing. Consequently, if someone is but nothing, God can make something out of him. Men make something into something else. But this is vain and useless work.
Thus God accepts no one except the abandoned, makes no one healthy except the sick, gives no one sight except the blind, brings no one to life except the dead, makes no one pious except sinners, makes no one wise except the foolish, and in short, has mercy upon no one except the wretched, and gives no one grace except those who have not grace.
Consequently, no proud person can become holy, wise or righteous, become the material with which God works, or have God’s work in him, but he remains in his own works and makes a fabricated, false and simulated saint out of himself, that is a hypocrite.
– Martin Luther
A newly-elected politician was visiting Washington DC to get aquainted. He was visiting in the home of one of the ranking senators who was trying to interpret the bizarre wonder of the capitol.
As they stood looking out over the Potomac River, an old deteriorating log floated by in view of the river. The old-timer said: “This city is like that log out there.”
The fledgling politician asked: “How’s that?”
The senator came back: “Well there are probably more than 100,000 grubs, ants, bugs and critters on that old log as it floats down the river. And I imagine every one of them thinks that he’s steering it.”
